Test team ended up at the Gunsite Academy in Paulden, Arizona, earlier this spring with 18 new pistols and revolvers and an RV full of ammunition for a week of intense trigger-pulling.

The Best 9mm Pistols

No segment of the firearms industry is more competitive than the handgun market. Every year, shooters are inundated with new offers. The Darwinian environment is a boon for those looking to acquire a new blaster. To stand out from the crowd, gun manufacturers have started producing feature-rich handguns with good ergonomics at reasonable prices.

For example, accessory rails are almost everywhere. Most handguns can be modified by changing the backstrap, switching the mag release from one side to the other, or both. Magazine designs that maximize capacity and maintain overall dimensions for convenient concealed carry are the norm. Then there are the thoughtful features, like slightly flared mag wells, butt thumb stippling patches, slide cuts, upgraded sights, and other tweaks included in many of the best handgun builds.

We organized the gun test into three broad categories: full, medium and micro, pitting the various firearms against their peers and the field at large. We shot the guns head-to-head on paper targets from 3 to 15 yards and used them on steel targets from 10 to 25. The steel targets included sheet metal rocks, double Texas stars, pepper poppers, and others that provided good feedback on how the guns handled during dynamic exercises that required rapid firing, target transitions, movement, and reloading.

Shooting on paper gave us a feel for the guns' accuracy and reliability, as we had a point of running many types of loads through each gun during evaluation.

Large Caliber Pistols: 8 Of The Most Powerful Options On The Market

Each handgun is evaluated in nine categories and given a score of 1 to 5 by each judge, except for the accuracy score which is based on data from longer range shooting. We average the scores for each category and use that to determine rankings and awards. The categories are handling, accuracy, workmanship, aesthetics, ergonomics, meets purpose, versatility, reliability and value.

These scores are then translated into report card grades for each firearm. Performance consists of scores of handling, accuracy, ergonomics and reliability. Design includes execution, aesthetics, meets purpose and versatility. The value stands for itself.

To receive an "excellent" rating, the average for this score must be 4.5 or higher, a difficult score to achieve. "Very good" is an average rating of 3.5 to 4.5; "Good" is 2.5-3.5; "Fair" is 1.5-2.5; And "poor" is below 1.5.

With this gun, CZ has done all the custom work to create a competition-ready gun so you don't have to. Out of the box it is configured for IPSC Standard division or USPSA Limited division matches. It comes with oversized controls and a stack of upgrades that help the gun do what it does best - put a lot of lead accurately on target in a short amount of time.

A Critical Look At Revolver Accuracy And Reliability

Of all the pistols in this year's pistol test, we probably put the most rounds through the TS2. It comes with three 20-round magazines - in a pretty heavy case, we might add - and we did everything we could to load and empty them as quickly as possible.

A look at the left side of the gun's frame shows the additions CZ included to improve performance. The safety has an oversized tab that can act as a shelf for the shooter's thumb. The magazine release is raised and oversized for easy access and manipulation. It is fitted with a nicely checkered tab in the same vibrant green as the pistol stocks and magazine bottom plates.

A substantial thumb is attached to the frame with two Torx fasteners. The shelf allows the shooter to push down on the pistol with the thumb of the support hand to minimize muzzle flip during recoil. The slide stop has a raised surface with three distinct steps for easy manipulation.

When you add the adjustable sights, the crisp single-action trigger, the overall weight of the gun (it tips the scale to a beefy 49 ounces), you end up with a gun that shoots, "almost on autopilot," like one of our Judge put it.

Best Handguns For Concealed Carry

In fact, the only criticism I can offer falls under the sour grapes category. That is, it is optimized for right-handed shooters. Links, like me, do not need to apply. I still had fun with the gun but was a little envious of my colleagues who were able to use the configuration of the TS2 Racing Green. You can check out Tyler Freel's glowing review of the CZ TS 2 Racing Green here.

Considering how refined the gun is and what you get for the price—you can find it for less than $2,000 online—it's no surprise that it ran away with the Editor's Choice award. For handling, accuracy, execution, ergonomics and reliability, it scored extremely high. It is not a very versatile gun, but for competition and general hobby use it has few equals. — John B. Snow

The new Sig Sauer P210 Carry is the latest version of one of the most revered and iconic defensive handguns ever made. The biggest changes to the platform include changing the frame material from steel to aluminum and shortening the barrel to 4.1 inches, bringing the P210's overall weight to a reasonable 29 ounces.

To enhance the pistol's appeal for defensive carry, Sig filled it with well-crafted G10 grips that are machined with an arched check pattern that gives the pistol a secure grip and allows easy access to the magazine release and safety.

The matte black grips go well with the nitro finish that Sig used on the frame and slide. Together with the hefty defensive sights - a square notch fixed rear and front post with illuminated dots - there is no doubt the intended role of the P210.

That said, it's a much more refined gun than your standard assault-fired polymer wonder gun. It has a nice crisp single action trigger and the most aesthetically pleasing safety and slide you will find on any defensive pistol.

Some shooters may be put off by the P210's single-stack magazine that only holds eight rounds, but that didn't bother us in the least. The gun's accuracy, speed on target and overall shootability won us over. If you want an in-depth look at the development of the P210 and P210 Carry, check out Sean Murphy's Sig Sauer P210 review.

One drawback that limits the versatility of the P210 is that it is configured for right-handed shooters. There is no way to turn any of the controls and manipulating them as a lefty is a chore.

Despite this, the P210 rose to the top of the pile in the mid-sized pistol category, earning an Editor's Choice award. Combining elegance, utility and a great price, it is a legacy defensive carry gun. — JBS

There's no shortage of micro-compact, assault-fired, optical-ready 9mms out there, so we didn't know what to expect when Kimber jumped into the competitive field with the R7 Mako. On the one hand, Kimber has built its reputation by creating feature-rich 1911s that offer shooters the custom details they crave. On the other hand, it can be difficult and painful for gun manufacturers to try to break into new markets, especially those saturated with established players.

But Kimber knocked it out of the park with the R7 Mako, so impressed the judges that it earned an impressive and unusual double win as Editor's Choice and Big Buy in the micro-sized pistol category.

Most Accurate Handgun

For a micro, the Kimber R7 Mako is remarkably easy to shoot. The smart structure of the frame, the palm swelling and dimensions of the grip and the weight of the slide make the Mako a comfortable and accurate shooter.

Hands Down This Is The Most Accurate Handgun I've Ever Shot. I Love My 92a1. Even With A Silencer, It's Balanced And Very On Point.

The trigger is good for this class of rifle, breaking at 5-pounds 3-ounces. It had a crisp reset that was easy to find and was part of the reason the Mako did well during high-speed exercises.

The gun comes with two magazines, one that holds 11 rounds and sits almost flush with the frame, and another that holds 13 rounds and extends far enough below the grip that the shooter's pinky can grip the gun as well. The ¼-inch difference in length makes a huge difference in the gun's shootability, and if you have the choice, you'll definitely want to run that magazine as the primary.

Speaking of the magazine, we were impressed with their construction, how easy they were to load to capacity, and how they dropped from the gun and clicked into place with a smooth safety.

The Kimber R7 Mako comes in two versions, one with an included red dot and the other with an optically clear image. The spring has come
