The new SIG Sauer GmbH, based in Germany, is a branch of the Swiss SIG. Unlike the larger SIG that makes a wide variety of products, SIG Sauer GmbH only makes firearms. Their first product was the P220, a single stack 9mm pistol intended to replace the P210. Designed for production with modern manufacturing equipment, the P220 is cheaper but not as accurate as the P210.

SIG Sauer GmbH acquired the American distributor in the 1980s SIGARMS Inc. which was established as a simple import company to sell SIG Sauer pistols in the US market. Most European firearms manufacturers have American branches registered as US companies, but SIGARMS has gone one step further. In 1990, they began producing components for SIG Sauer pistols in the United States, and in 1992, they began producing the P229 in .40 S&W. SIGARMS will be SIG Sauer, Inc. in 2007.
However, the problems started with the Swiss SIG.
